Everyone has a phone. Poverty still did not end.
Visible assets improved in many rural households, but poverty did not end. Rural and urban households face different pressures: rural poverty remains higher, while cities turn food, rent, utilities, school, health, and transport into cash bills.
The myth
If a family looks better off, poverty must have ended.
This is what poverty looks like from a comfortable distance: a phone, pakka home, solar panel, or remittance is treated as proof of security.
Rural reality
Some buffers reduce cash pressure.
For some families, community support, nearby produce, a pakka home, and lower cash housing costs help. They do not guarantee stable income or protection from a shock.
Urban reality
The city turns survival into bills.
Rent, purchased food, transport, utilities, school, and care make city and suburban life more cash-bound, even when a household earns more.
Shared test
Can the household withstand a bad month?
The question is whether earnings, food, care, schooling, and the home still hold when work or a transfer is delayed.
Different pressures
Rural and urban households face different squeezes.
Rural households may have community, nearby produce, better shelter, or lower cash housing costs. Urban households are more exposed to cash bills. Neither condition makes a household secure.
Household condition
Rural buffers
What improved
For some families, kin, nearby produce, better shelter, and lower cash housing costs reduce daily pressure.
What it does not prove
They do not guarantee stable earnings, nearby care, schooling, or resilience when work or a crop fails.
Household condition
Urban cash exposure
What improved
Cities can offer work, services, and proximity to markets.
What it does not prove
Rent, purchased food, transport, utilities, school, and care turn survival into a monthly cash requirement.
Household condition
Remittance sender
What improved
Foreign income can protect a rural or urban household and raise visible consumption.
What it does not prove
Household condition
Shared exposure
What improved
Phones, solar, and better homes can improve daily life in both settings.
What it does not prove
Visible assets do not prove that a household can absorb food inflation, rent, illness, or a delayed payment.
Poverty did not disappear
The same period shows better access and higher poverty pressure.
Phones and internet rose. Remittances rose. But official poverty, rural poverty, urban poverty, and food insecurity rose too.
Access rose; pressure rose too
Y-axis: percent. Internet means household access, remit. means foreign remittances as a share of household income, and food means households with moderate or severe food insecurity.
Both charts use the same 0-75% y-axis, so bar height stays comparable across the two panels.
Household pressure stack
The new poverty arrives as bills.
Food plus housing and utilities take 62.4% of household expenditure, about Rs 49,421 per month from the PBS average household consumption base of Rs 79,150. The rest of life is forced into the smaller space left behind.
Food
Food and non-alcoholic beverages take the largest share of household expenditure.
Housing and utilities
Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels are the second heavy block.
Left for everything else
Transport, education, health, communication, clothing, maintenance, restaurants, and other needs all compete inside this remainder.

Operating capacity
The real test starts after the phone arrives.
For PK Ventures, the rebuild question is not only whether people have assets. It is whether households and communities can earn, absorb shocks, educate children, get care, maintain assets, and produce useful work.
01
Earn
Can the household earn reliably without depending on one fragile source?
02
Absorb
Can it survive food inflation, job loss, illness, flood, or a remittance break?
03
Educate
Can children stay in useful schooling when other bills rise?
04
Maintain
Can the family keep utilities, solar, housing, and devices working over time?
05
Produce
Can local work, services, and companies turn assets into income and trust?
The standard
Build for the poverty that remains after the phone, the house, the solar panel, and the remittance.
The useful response is not nostalgia for visible deprivation. It is operating capacity: stable earning power, trained operators, reliable services, finance discipline, useful companies, and places where daily life can be trusted.
Do not stop at agreement
Challenge the argument, add what we missed, or show us where it should become work.
